The South Luangwa emerald season is coming to an end, meaning that the first visitors of the 2018 season are starting to arrive at Kafunta River Lodge.

Celebrating it’s 20th Birthday this July, Kafunta River Lodge is set alongside the banks of the Luangwa River overlooking a busy waterhole. 


Open nine months of the year, Kafunta River Lodge is a classic safari lodge, built on raised wooden platforms under thatched roofs. The lodge boasts eight spacious chalets and two luxury suites, each with a private verandah with views out over the waterhole and National Park.

The newest addition to Kafunta River Lodge is the Fig Tree Spa. This little gem is nestled away in a peaceful corner of the lodge where guests can unwind in the tranquil surroundings of the bush. With a variety of treatments available including massages, providing the perfect break from all the action. 


If that doesn't tempt guests then, the only natural hot tub in the Luangwa Valley just might. Found in the grounds of Kafunta River Lodge, generated from natural geothermal sources, guests can experience magnificent views across the flood plain, with a gin and tonic in hand. During the cooler nights from May to July this is a recommended ending to an eventful day on safari. Rates range from $405-$550 pppn.


The Kafunta team are now focusing their efforts on the on the re-construction of Kafunta's two seasonal camps; Island Bush Camp and Three Rivers Camp, which are both due to open again on the 25th May through to 31st October.


Approximately three hours south of Kafunta River Lodge lies Island Bush Camp. On the banks of the Luangwa river, Island Bush Camp comprises of five stilted chalets, each offering a real 'close to nature' experience. Walking safaris are very popular here and should guests wish to combine their stay with Three Rivers Camp, they can walk between the two properties whilst their luggage is transported. Rates for Island Bush Camp are $550 pppn.


Three Rivers Camp is the newest Kafunta property, only opening in May 2017. Set on the confluence of the Luangwa, Kapamba and Lusangazi rivers, dotted amongst the trees offering optimum privacy are five luxurious and spacious tents. Each en-suite tent boasts a star deck on an elevated, private platform - offering stunning views by day and the opportunity to sleep under the milky way at night. Rates for Three Rivers Camp are $550 pppn.
