Today (5th September) is International Day of Charity. The day to all join together to celebrate and support charities that are, through sustainable development, working towards eradicating poverty in critical areas; people, planet, prosperity, peace, and partnership.
One Kamili partner doing just that is Waterberry Zambezi Lodge and River Farmhouse, sister properties in the Livingstone area on the banks of the Zambezi River. Waterberry founded Tukongote Community Projects in 2009 with the aim to improve the educational opportunities in nearby villages. Starting with one preschool class, the Tukongote Community Projects has grown to support more than 400 children in three preschools and one primary school.
The recently built Tukongote Community Preschool opened in March 2017 and is possibly the brightest school in Zambia. Here, 75 little ones receive free creative, fun and holistic schooling from 25 local teachers and support staff, 14 of whom are working towards gaining recognised teaching qualifications.
In addition to this, the project sponsors children - all of whom would have dropped out of education - through secondary school. They are also in the midst of constructing a primary school (due to open this December) as well as a local community centre which will host a library and classes for adults, due to open early 2018.
"As a community, as teachers, as pupils and, as Waterberry staff, we are all proud to be part of the Tukongote Community Projects, and we all thank everyone who has helped us over the years to reach this amazing place. As Nelson Mandela said, "Education is the most powerful weapon we can use to change the world." For the children of Tukongote the first step on that ladder of education just got a whole lot brighter." – Kelly Geoghegan, Community Liaison
VISIT THE TUKONGOTE COMMUNITY PROJECTS
You can visit the Tukongote Community Projects whilst staying at Waterberry and River Farmhouse on one of our 5-day Zambia Fam Trips in 2018. Guests of the properties are all invited to join village walks where they can experience everyday rural Zambian life. Since opening in March 2017 Tukongate has welcomed lots of visitors and, as one guest put it, "you just can't help but smile at Tukongote".
